Center for Law and Global Affairs

The Center for Law and Global Affairs supports and inspires research, education and practice regarding emerging forms of transnational governance that extend beyond the traditional paradigms of international law. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, state and non-state actors – from corporations to grassroots movements – manage governance and power in new ways. These changes are occurring within a rapidly changing world facing environmental degradation, emerging conflicts, technological innovation, mass migration and shifts in commerce that require innovative approaches to defining and enabling social order. The Center engages and explores these legal and policy issues through conferences, colloquia, public lectures, courses, seminars, interdisciplinary scholarship and international projects.

The Center’s core objectives include
  • Enabling and producing innovative scholarship regarding evolving forms of international law that extend beyond treaties and other formal legal mechanisms to include private and public regulatory frameworks, civil society initiatives, corporate actions, and social networks that define the larger global order.
  • Developing and applying new methodologies that draw on interdisciplinary qualitative and quantitative empirical research to better understand how the rule of law operates in diverse international contexts.
  • Creating and implementing projects and policy initiatives that link the Center with international fieldwork and link evolving theories on global law with practical applications involving human rights, security, global economic activities, human trafficking, international health, and the rule of law.
  • Teaching and training students and professionals through coursework, advising, research and experiential learning to work more effectively in the new global regulatory environment.
The Center for Law and Global Affairs serves as the focal point for the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law’s interdisciplinary engagement with international and transnational law. The Center works cooperatively with other schools, centers and programs at Arizona State University and with many local, regional and national partners. The Center is an interdisciplinary, faculty-run institution linking scholars, practitioners, students and community members interested in better understanding and affecting the relationship between law and an increasingly global integrated world.
