Program Participation

Welcome HNBA Mentoring Program Teams

Thank you for being a part of our multi-level mentoring program. Since the 2007 pilot year, the MentoRING teams have been a resounding success, with the ASU program being one of two pilot programs that were highly beneficial and assisted the HNBA in winning a partnership award from the American Bar Association. The program has grown and changed with your support and participation. Teams are composed of attorneys, law students, and undergraduate students. High school students are a vital part of our mission even though they are not matched on teams. They will be invited to the events and be able to meet and talk to all of you, as well as there will be events just for them.If you have ideas or suggestions about programming and events, we welcome your input.

Some TIPS for the success of your team:

  • Please write down how each member prefers or participates in communication for your team, such as email, texting, cell phone, etc.
  • Please do intra-mentoring.You do not need to get every member of your team together for mentoring to be successful.One-on-one is fine so each member gets full benefit.
  • Don’t limit your mentoring activities to strictly legal events or in-person.Perhaps challenge another team at bowling…
  • Get an idea of typical availability now for your team.It may be that weekday afternoons are free, or never on Saturday morning.Perhaps set some dates – did you bring your calendars?
  • Consider doing team outreach with one of the high schools or junior high schools.

If you have any questions during the year, please feel free to contact any of the coordinators below.

Theme: Outreach to Elementary Schools

The organizing team encourages the mentoring program to continue efforts to reach out to students in grades below high school. For example, a team could decide to make a presentation to a middle-school class, a 4th or 5th grade class, or even a 2nd grade class. It might be a presentation on a current legal or policy issue or on the branches of government; or a skit that illustrates a breach of contract and kicks off a discussion about contracts. Or - especially in lower grades - the enactment of a published mock-trial skit based on Goldilocks' entering the house of the Three Bears, using both team members and elementary school students to play the roles. Such an activity would provide mentoring team members with a meaningful activity, would inform and inspire younger students, and would help develop working relationships among team members, thus paving the way for other kinds of mentoring communications.
