Requesting Materials

You may place requests for most ASU-owned library materials by using the Request function in the library catalog. 

Items with a 'Shelf' Status
The Law Library offers a free book retrieval service to College of Law students, faculty, and staff. Law Library staff will retrieve materials with a 'shelf' status from any library on the Tempe campus, including the Law Library. There is no limit on the number of items that can be requested through the book retrieval service. Items may also be requested from libraries on other ASU campuses (Downtown, West, and Polytechnic) to be sent to the Law Library for pickup. Most requests for available Tempe campus items are filled by the end of the next day. Materials sent from other campuses may take a few days to be delivered. You will receive an email when the requested items are ready for pickup.

Items that are Checked Out
If a Law Library item you would like to use is checked out, you may request the item and it will be held for you upon its return. Requesting a Law Library item will not change the due date (recall).  Checked out materials owned by other ASU Libraries can also be requested through the library catalog.  ASU Libraries materials are subject to recall and recall policies are strictly enforced.

To request materials:

  1. Locate the title in the library catalog.
  2. Click on the Request button located at the top of the page.
  3. Enter your ASURITE ID and password.
  4. Select Law as the pickup location and click Submit.
  5. If more than one copy is owned, select the desired copy.
  6. Click on Request Selected Item.
You will be notified via email when the item is ready for pickup.  Most items will be held for one week.  Videos and DVDs will be held for three days.  Not all items are available for request.  If the request button in the catalog is not visible or if you see the message "Sorry, this item is currently unavailable to request online.  See Circ Desk to request"  contact the Law Library Circulation Desk at (480) 965-6144.  Law Library items that cannot be requested online may be requested in person at the Circulation Desk.
 

Interlibrary Loan

If you need library resources (books, articles, dissertations, etc.) not owned by ASU, you may request the materials through Interlibrary Loan. To place an interlibrary loan request, use the online request form or fill out a paper form at the Law Library Circulation Desk. Questions about interlibrary loans should be directed to Carrie Henteleff at 480-965-7114.

Some tips for managing your interlibrary loan requests:

Place your requests as soon as possible. While most interlibrary loans arrive within 10 business days, it can sometimes take several weeks to locate a library able to fill and deliver the request.  Pick up the materials promptly once they arrive. Most ILLs have only 3-4 week loan periods.  The following types of materials are difficult to obtain through ILL:
  • Newly published books
  • Entire volumes or issues of periodicals
  • Single volumes of multi-volume sets
  • Reference works or Reserve materials
  • Rare books or original manuscripts
  • Entire newspapers
  • Some doctoral dissertations and master's theses

The Law Library's Interlibrary Loan Service is available only to College of Law students, faculty, and staff.  ASU students may use the interlibrary loan services offered through ASU Libraries.  Visitors and Community Card members should check the interlibrary loan services offered through their local public library.
