How Do I Find Indian Treaties?

There are several sources that can help you find a treaty between a tribe and the U.S. government. These sources are listed below. The ones that are freely available on the web are listed first.

United States Statutes at Large
United States Statutes at Large is the official compilation of ratified treaties between tribes and the federal government. Volume 7 has treaties created between 1778-1845, and later treaties are in volumes 9-16. These volumes are available on the web as part of the Library of Congress’s American Memory project and are also on HeinOnline and in print in the law library in Law Core.
Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties
Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties is commonly referred to as Kappler’s. Volume two of this set has ratified and unratified treaties created between 1778-1883. Kappler’s is freely available on the web as part of the Oklahoma State University Library digital collection and is also on HeinOnline and in print in the law library’s Indian Law collection at KF8203 1904.
Early Recognized Treaties with American Indian Nations
Early Recognized Treaties with American Indian Nations
is a free web site hosted by the University of Nebraska. It has nine treaties created between 1722-1805 that are not published in the Statutes at Large or Kappler’s, the two main sources for locating treaties.
Native American People Treaties, Ratified and Unratified Database
LexisNexis’s Native American People Treaties, Ratified and Unratified database (NAPTRY)
has ratified and
unratified treaties created between 1787-1883.
Documents of American Indian Diplomacy: Treaties, Agreements, and Conventions, 1775-1979
Documents of American Indian Diplomacy: Treaties, Agreements, and Conventions, 1775-1979, is available in print (KF8202 1999) and as a NetLibrary e-book to the ASU community with an ASURITE and anyone present in the law library. In addition to ratified treaties, it has unratified treaties, treaties between tribes and states, treaties between tribes and foreign nations, and intertribal compacts.
