Law school is rigorous by design. Your time is filled with reading, writing and learning how to think like a lawyer. However, community opportunities outside of the classroom often shape your experience just as much.

At ASU Law, student organizations are one of the most direct ways to build your community, explore your interests and start developing the skills that will define your legal career. With more than 50 student-led organizations, there is space for every student to find their people and their purpose.

What do student organizations add to the law school experience?

Student organizations extend your legal education beyond casebooks. They create opportunities to engage with the law in ways that feel practical, personal and – let’s not forget – fun!

Through student orgs, you can:

  • Connect with peers who share your academic or cultural interests
  • Attend panels, networking events and speaker series
  • Participate in pro bono and community-based projects
  • Explore different practice areas before committing to a path

These experiences complement what you learn in class and help you understand how law operates in real settings, all while building delightful connections with your peers. At ASU Law, that link between education and community impact is a core part of the student experience.

How do student organizations build professional skills?

More than technical knowledge, successful legal careers require communication, leadership and the ability to collaborate under pressure.

Student organization involvement gives you early opportunities to build those skills. Whether you are planning an event, coordinating with other groups or leading a team, you are practicing the same competencies expected in the profession.

Students develop:

  • Leadership and team management experience
  • Public speaking and event facilitation skills
  • Professional communication habits
  • Organizational and time management abilities

These benefits directly impact your confidence and performance when entering internships, externships and your first legal role.

Can student organizations help with networking and career paths?

Yes, and often in ways students do not expect at first.

Leveraging ASU Law’s unique connection to the legal community in Phoenix and beyond, student organizations regularly bring attorneys, alumni and industry professionals into the law school environment. These interactions create low-pressure opportunities to ask questions, build relationships and learn how different legal careers actually function.

Student organizations:

  • Collaborate across interests and identities
  • Host events that are increasingly hybrid and accessible
  • Partner on pro bono and community initiatives
  • Create spaces for both professional growth and personal connection

At ASU Law, networking starts early and continues throughout your time as a student. Career Services encourages students to attend events, connect with practitioners and explore opportunities that align with their goals.

What makes student organizations at ASU Law unique?

ASU Law’s approach to student life reflects the diversity of its students and learning environments. Whether you are studying in downtown Phoenix, spending time in Washington, D.C., or participating in the new part-time, fully online JD modality, the goal is the same: meaningful connection.

With more than 50 established student organizations ranging from focuses on professional interests and practice areas, to artistic passions, recreational activities and cultural identities, there is a community for everyone.

Students are also encouraged to take initiative. If an organization does not exist, ASU Law provides a clearly defined pathway to creating one. That entrepreneurial mindset is part of what defines the ASU Law experience.

How can you get involved in student organizations at ASU Law?

Getting involved starts early. Each fall, ASU Law hosts a student organization fair where new students can explore groups, meet leaders and find opportunities to participate. Going forward, student orgs also host information sessions for both new and returning students to explore groups on deeper levels.

From there, involvement can look different for every student:

  • Attend meetings and events
  • Join committees or volunteer for projects
  • Take on leadership roles as a 1L representative or beyond
  • Collaborate across organizations on shared initiatives

The most important step is simply showing up. From there, your involvement can grow alongside your interests and goals.
