Emerging health tech and the law, ‘like peanut butter and jelly’

The last decade has been a whirlwind of technological breakthroughs in health care, from artificial intelligence and 3D printing to gene editing. At the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, two professors recognized the need for students to understand the variety of emerging technologies disrupting health care and the ethical and legal challenges behind them. This led to the creation of the Health Technologies, Innovation and the Law course.

Ann Lewandowski, an online Master of Legal Studies student at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, grew up surrounded by health care professionals. Both of her parents worked in the field. She also spent time working at a large pharmaceutical company, which cemented her interest in health care.

The Center for Public Health Law and Policy at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University is a leader in health care law, public health law, policy and ethics. It drives numerous initiatives to address critical issues, from analyzing legal frameworks surrounding public health data to collaborating with the federal Administration of Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and the Arizona Department of Health Services on emergency legal preparedness and response. The center plays a key role in shaping the field.

ASU Law launches health care law and administration degree emphasis

Health care is the largest and fastest growing industry in the U.S., with data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicating that health care occupations are estimated to grow by 13% between 2021 and 2031. And while medical knowledge is a necessity that goes without saying for those in the field, legal knowledge is increasingly important as well.
