Alan Adams Matheson
The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University mourns the passing of former Dean Alan A. Matheson.
Matheson was a founding faculty member at ASU Law, where he taught constitutional law for 47 years. He served in various leadership roles, including assistant dean from 1967 to 1970, associate dean from 1970 to 1978 and dean from 1978 to 1984.
Matheson was honored for his time in his various dean roles in a 1984 issue of the Arizona State University Law Forum. In the forum, colleagues described Matheson as a leader who pushed the college to succeed and deeply cared about his role and the people at the school.
Matheson received numerous teaching awards throughout his career, was elected president of the Arizona State University Faculty Senate and earned the ASU Distinguished Service Award. He also stepped up to serve as interim dean on several occasions when the role was needed, following his transition to a professor.
In addition to his contributions to ASU Law, Matheson was a father of three, husband to his wife, Mimi and the proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024, at 11 a.m. in Utah.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to initiatives that were important to Matheson, including the Alan A. Matheson Scholarship at ASU Law.
Further details can be found in Alan A. Matheson’s obituary.
