The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University recently launched a first-of-its-kind summer course designed for professionals from NextEra Energy Resources, one of the nation’s leading clean energy companies.

Taught by Troy Rule, Joseph Feller Memorial chair in law and sustainability, professor of law and director of the Law and Sustainability Program, the intensive, weeklong course brought 10 members of NextEra’s legal and policy teams to Phoenix for an in-depth, hands-on learning experience.

The customized course explored legal frameworks, regulatory policies and contract negotiations that shape the renewable energy industry. Sessions covered topics ranging from permitting and siting to contract drafting and negotiation, including a session led by Sue Chesler, clinical professor of law. The course provided participants with practical tools and insights they can apply directly to their work in renewable energy development.

“The course provided new insights and practical tools that will help me be a more informed and effective lawyer in the renewable energy space,” said Melissa Hochmuth, a senior attorney at NextEra Energy Resources, who took the course.

In addition to classroom sessions, the visiting professionals experienced ASU Law’s downtown Phoenix campus, networked with faculty and explored the surrounding area during their stay.

The inaugural course reflects ASU Law’s leadership in energy law education and its ability to collaborate with industry partners to create targeted, high-impact learning opportunities that address emerging challenges in the field.
