Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a lawyer or how to start the process? Even how to find the right law school, like the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University?

It may seem intimidating and difficult from the outside, but ASU Law Dean Fellow for Innovation and Clinical Professor of Law Kimberly Holst makes it clear and manageable through the Study Hall: How to Become series.

Study Hall is a series of YouTube videos created by EdPlus at Arizona State University that provides supplemental education to help learners master complex topics in introductory college courses.

Holst said she was approached to help create a video that makes it easier for non-lawyers to understand.

“The writers did a great job of infusing humor while still including a lot of helpful information about the process of becoming a lawyer,” Holst explained. “It takes a step-by-step approach from the Law School Admission Test to being admitted to the bar.”

In just under 17 minutes, viewers are guided through what a lawyer does, including legal research, case management, writing legal documents and giving advice to clients. The video also covers how to become a lawyer in the United States, the different types of lawyers and how much they make.

“All of this important information is for those interested in the career of law,” Holst said.

“I participate in activities to recruit people to law school because I want to help demystify the process. As a first-generation college and law student, I had so many questions about the process,” she said. “I was lucky to have had mentors from my years participating in mock trials in high school and college. I hope this video can help those who might have an interest in law school get an idea of what the process looks like and that it's achievable.”
