Aaron Hernandez named to the 2025 Phoenix Business Journal 40 Under 40 list

Aaron Hernandez, assistant dean and executive director of the Allan “Bud” Selig Sports Law and Business Program at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, has been named to the 2025 Phoenix Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 list.

The annual list honors 40 young professionals significantly impacting the greater Phoenix area. Hernandez was selected from more than 370 nominees for his leadership in sports law and his contributions to the broader community.

“I hope people see this recognition as a reflection of all the wonderful people in my life who have supported my journey — family, friends, colleagues, mentors and students,” he said. “This award means a lot to me because it commends all their work, and I could not be more grateful for their belief in me.”

Under Hernandez’s leadership, the MSLB program has grown into a globally recognized hub, drawing students from more than 10 countries while placing graduates in top industry roles. His work has helped elevate the program’s national profile, thanks partly to his extensive network built during his time at the NCAA, where he traveled nationwide to connect with sports executives and decision makers. As a result, 80% of MSLB students are working in sports within six months of graduating.

Before joining ASU Law, Hernandez led high-profile investigations at the NCAA, including cases at the University of Florida and Baylor University, which prompted significant reforms in college athletics. In 2018, he became the first openly gay administrator in college football, a milestone that has shaped his advocacy and leadership style.

Hernandez serves on the boards of Uplifting Athletes, a program that supports rare disease research, and the National Sports Law Institute. At the time of his election, he was the youngest elected board member in the history of the Sports Lawyers Association. Through pro bono work, he continues to represent athletes and coaches in NCAA matters, emphasizing fairness and ethical treatment in college sports.

A ceremony honoring the 2025 class of 40 Under 40 will be held Aug. 7 in Scottsdale.
