Transcripts
ASU Law requires that you have your international transcripts submitted to LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service Authentication and Evaluation (CAS A&E) by the issuing institution. You must use LSAC’s CAS C&E if:
- you completed your bachelor’s degree from an institution outside of the United States, its territories/associated states, or Canada or
- you were directly enrolled at one or more institutions outside the U.S., its territories/associated states, or Canada and the total amount of work you completed at all of these institutions combined is the equivalent of more than one year of undergraduate study in the U.S., its territories/associated states, or Canada.
Exception: Do not have a transcript sent from an international institution if your bachelor’s degree is from a U.S., U.S. territory/associated state, or Canadian school and your work was completed through an overseas study program that was clearly sponsored by a U.S., U.S. territory/associated state, or Canadian school. In this case, the transcript must be sent by the sponsoring school.
The cost of this service is included in the JD CAS subscription fee. A foreign credential evaluation will be completed by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), which will be incorporated into your JD CAS law school report.

English Proficiency
All applicants must meet the requirements of the Graduate College as well as those at ASU Law. If English is not your native language, and you have not completed a bachelor’s degree or higher at a regionally accredited institution in the United States, you must provide evidence of English proficiency as indicated by acceptable scores. Most competitive applicants should have a TOEFL score of at or near 600 (pBT) or 90 (iBT), a IELTS score of at or near 7.0, a Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of at least 65, or a Duolingo test score at or near 115. Exceptional candidates with relevant experience and background who have scores slightly below the thresholds above will also be considered.

ASU's institutional code is 4007. LSAC's TOEFL code for the JD Credential Assembly Service is 8395. Your score will be included in the Foreign Credential Evaluation document that will be included in your JD CAS law school report.
Other ways to demonstrate English proficiency:
- Applicants who are U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
- Applicants who have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S.
- Applicants who have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree or higher from an international institution that is officially recognized by that country, and the country is on the ASU English Speaking Country and Territory List.
- Applicants who have completed at least nine semester hours of graduate coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher at a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S or from an international institution that is officially recognized in that country and is on the ASU English Speaking Country and Territory List.
- Applicants who have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree or higher from an international institution that is officially recognized by that country, and the sole medium of instruction for the program was in English. Student should email gograd@asu.edu to request exemption and include a letter from the institution on letterhead indicating language of instruction or provide information on the institution website to verify language of instruction.
- Applicants who have completed at least 90 semester hours of undergraduate coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher at a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S.
- Four years of high school in the U.S. with four years of English.

Financial resources
International applicants must verify that they have the financial resources to cover their expenses during graduate study at ASU, as required by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. The Graduate Admissions Office provides the Financial Guarantee form to international applicants, who then must see that the form is completed, verified by a bank or sponsoring organization, and returned to the Graduate Admissions Office. The I-20 or IAP66 (documents needed to obtain a student visa) are issued only after the completed, properly verified guarantee form has arrived.
